Wayne Barrar’s Ruamahanga River (Perch scale) 2018 is from a new and ongoing project that considers the ways we can record, trace or map sites and locations. In this series, Barrar uses a microscope to photograph fish scales he has collected at various sites around New Zealand. The scales are holders of scientific information (such as the age of the fish they come from), and are linked to ‘location’ in the sense of the where they have been collected, yet yield a multitude of metaphoric readings through the way they are illuminated, abstracted and composed – a topography within a topography.
